Communication for teachers

Communication takes several forms including verbal, physical & literary. It’s an essential human need to be afforded opportunities to communicate with others & share thoughts & experiences.

As well as being facilitators of learning, teachers are professional communicators, & whilst the concept of communication is touched upon in PGCE, the finer points necessary to successfully do the job are often overlooked.

During PGCE, the concept of clear communication is discussed within the context of using plain English rather than jargon or unnecessary acronyms etc. rather than the quality of sound, inflection, intonation & variation within the presentation & explanation of information. Effective verbal communication is as much about the style of delivery as the content.

Have you ever undertaken voice training or analysed the way you use your voice? It’s hugely important to first understand what you are doing with your voice, so that you are better equipped to tackle issues that negatively impact on both your teaching & your health.

  • Have you lost my voice or felt vocally tired/hoarse after teaching?
  • Do you use your voice effectively?
  • Is there a colleague who uses their voice really brilliantly? And why/how do they do this?
  •  Is vocal strain something that is/was discussed during your training either initial or CPD?
